Who Was Imam Reza?
Imam Reza was Ali ibn Musa, the son of Imam Musa al-Kazim. Born and raised in Madinah, he belonged to the family of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and occupies an important place in Islamic religious history. Twelver Shia Muslims recognize him as the eighth Imam and honour his religious knowledge and leadership.
His later life brought him to the eastern Islamic world during the Abbasid period. He died in 818 CE, and his burial place became the focus of the sanctuary that visitors know today.
Religious Significance and Ziyarat
For Twelver Shia pilgrims, visiting Imam Reza’s resting place is an important form of ziyarat, or devotional visitation. It provides an occasion to honour the Imam, reflect on his place within the Ahl al-Bayt—the family of the Prophet ﷺ—and devote time to prayer and remembrance.
The Shrine and the Growth of Mashhad
The history of Mashhad is closely connected to the sanctuary. The city grew around the burial place and its pilgrimage activity. Over time, the sanctuary developed into a large ensemble of buildings with contributions from the Seljuk, Ilkhanid, Timurid, Safavid, Qajar, and contemporary eras.
The Golden Dome and Sacred Architecture
The shrine’s golden dome is one of its defining features, alongside its gold-clad doors, inscriptions, mirrored surfaces (aineh-kari), and magnificent courtyards.
