Types of Nafs

Islamic teachings categorize Nafs into three main types:

1. Nafs-e-Ammara (The Commanding Self)

This is the lowest state of Nafs, which inclines toward evil and worldly desires.

"Indeed, the soul is inclined to evil, except for those upon whom my Lord has mercy." (Quran 12:53)

2. Nafs-e-Lawwama (The Blaming Self)

A self-aware state where a person acknowledges their mistakes and repents. This is the soul of conscience that reproaches the person for wrongdoing.

وَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالنَّفْسِ اللَّوَّامَةِ

"And I swear by the self-reproaching soul." (Quran 75:2)

3. Nafs-e-Mutmainna (The Content Self)

The highest state of Nafs, where a person attains inner peace and complete submission to Allah.

يَا أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ ۝ ارْجِعِي إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً

"O reassured soul, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing to Him." (Quran 89:27-28)
