Duas for Rizq and Sustenance

The most authentic prophetic and Qur'anic supplications for halal sustenance, wealth, debt relief and barakah — with Arabic, transliteration, translation and Hadith sources.

Understanding Rizq in Islam

Rizq (رِزْق) is the Arabic word for sustenance — every provision Allah sends a creature, including food, wealth, knowledge, family, time, and even peace of mind. The Qur'an declares: "And there is no creature on earth but that upon Allah is its provision" (Surah Hud 11:6). Islam does not teach passive waiting for rizq; it teaches active pursuit combined with absolute reliance on Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "If you were to rely upon Allah with true reliance, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds — they leave hungry in the morning and return full in the evening" (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2344, sahih). The duas below are the most authentic Sunnah supplications for asking Allah to expand rizq through halal means and to bless what He has already given.

The Core Duas for Rizq

1. The Halal-Sufficiency Dua

Transliteration: Allahumma-kfini bi-halalika 'an haramik, wa aghnini bi-fadlika 'amman siwak.

Translation: "O Allah, make what You have made lawful sufficient for me, so I have no need for what You have forbidden, and enrich me by Your bounty so I have no need of anyone besides You."

Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3563 (hasan) — narrated by Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA). The Prophet ﷺ taught him this dua specifically to recite when burdened with debt, and Ali said: "Even if you owed a debt as great as the mountain of Sabir, Allah would settle it for you."

2. The Comprehensive Morning Dua for Rizq

Transliteration: Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

Translation: "O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, wholesome provision, and accepted deeds."

Source: Sunan Ibn Majah 925 (sahih) — Umm Salamah (RA) reports the Prophet ﷺ would recite this every morning after the Fajr prayer. It captures the three pillars of a blessed life in one sentence: knowledge, sustenance, and worship.

3. The Qur'anic Dua of Musa (AS)

Transliteration: Rabbi inni lima anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqir.

Translation: "My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You would send down to me, in desperate need."

Source: Qur'an, Surah al-Qasas 28:24. Prophet Musa (AS) recited this in Madyan when he was poor, homeless, exhausted, and had just helped two women water their flock. Within hours, Allah answered the dua: shelter, marriage, ten years of honourable work, and ultimately prophethood.

4. The Du'a of 'Isa (AS) for a Table Spread

Transliteration: Allahumma Rabbana anzil 'alayna ma'idatan mina-s-sama'i takunu lana 'idan li-awwalina wa akhirina wa ayatan minka, warzuqna wa anta khayru-r-raziqin.

Translation: "O Allah, our Lord, send down to us a table spread from the heavens to be a festival for the first and last of us, and a sign from You. And provide for us — and You are the best of providers."

Source: Qur'an, Surah al-Ma'idah 5:114. The petition itself — "warzuqna wa anta khayru-r-raziqin" — is often recited as a stand-alone dua for sustenance.

5. Istighfar — The Qur'anic Wealth-Generator

Translation: "Seek forgiveness of your Lord — indeed He is ever a perpetual forgiver. He will send rain from the sky upon you in showers, and increase you in wealth and children, and grant you gardens and rivers."

Source: Qur'an, Surah Nuh 71:10–12. Imam al-Hasan al-Basri reportedly told one man complaining of poverty, another of barrenness, another of drought, and another of weak harvests — all four — simply: "Make istighfar." When asked why one prescription for four different problems, he recited these verses. See our duas for forgiveness for the full istighfar routine.

The Sunnah Means of Increasing Rizq

The Prophet ﷺ identified specific actions that Allah uses to expand provision. These are not magical formulas; they are the lawful causes Allah has placed alongside du'a:

  • Maintaining family ties (silat al-rahim): "Whoever loves to have his provision expanded and his life extended, let him maintain ties of kinship" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5985).
  • Giving charity: "Charity does not decrease wealth" (Sahih Muslim 2588). Allah replaces what is given for His sake.
  • Marriage: Surah an-Nur 24:32 — "If they are poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty."
  • Taqwa and istighfar: Surah at-Talaq 65:2–3 — "Whoever fears Allah, He will make a way out for him and will provide for him from where he does not expect."
  • Going out early in the day: "O Allah, bless my nation in its early mornings" (Sunan Abu Dawud 2606, sahih).
  • Working with one's own hands: The Prophet ﷺ said no food is better than what a person eats from the labour of their own hand (Sahih al-Bukhari 2072).

Common Questions

Why does my du'a for rizq feel unanswered?

The Prophet ﷺ taught that every du'a is answered in one of three ways: Allah gives the exact thing asked, He removes a harm equivalent to it, or He stores its reward for the Day of Judgement (Musnad Ahmad 11133). Many also overlook the conditions: lawful income, lawful food, sincerity, and patience without saying "I made dua but was not answered" (Sahih Muslim 2735).

Is asking for wealth contradictory to zuhd (asceticism)?

No. Zuhd is the heart's detachment from wealth, not the absence of it. Companions like Abu Bakr, Uthman, and Abdur-Rahman ibn 'Awf were among the wealthiest of their time and the closest to the Prophet ﷺ. Wealth in the hand without wealth in the heart is the Sunnah balance.

Are these duas only for money?

No. The word rizq covers every form of provision — health, time, knowledge, a righteous spouse, beneficial children, peace of mind. The Prophet ﷺ often paired rizq with 'afiyah (well-being) in the same supplication, treating them as twin gifts.

What is the best time to make du'a for rizq?

After Fajr (Sunan Ibn Majah 925), in the last third of the night, in sujud, on Fridays in the final hour before Maghrib, and between the adhan and iqamah. Combining the time, place, and lawful means is the prophetic method.
